Childhood & Early Life

Originated Tina Blacker was born in New York City on February 11, 1934, and her parents had already divorced by the time she was four. Her mother Sylvia (née Horn, subsequently Myers), a fashion model, reared her as an only child.

Joseph Blacker, her father, first had a confectionery business in Brooklyn before becoming an accountant. Tina went to Miami University, Scarborough Day School, and PS 6.

Louise had a daughter named Caprice, who went on to become an MTV producer and author, during her marriage to radio and television broadcaster and interviewer Les Crane, which lasted from 1966 until 1971.

In a 1973 Love American Style episode, Tina Louise and Les Crane made an appearance together as a married couple. Published in 2006, Caprice Crane’s first book, Stupid and Contagious, was dedicated to her mother.

Louise has been a lifelong member of the Actors Studio and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Louise has made a strong case for raising young readers. When I Grow Up, her 2007 book, had a percentage of its revenues given to reading initiatives.

She also said in a 2013 interview that she has been helping at the public schools in her community since 1996. Her two published novels are When I Grow Up (2007) and Sunday: A Memoir (1997).

The latter is a children’s book that, using imaginative and hilarious comparisons of animal kingdom accomplishments, encourages kids to think they can become whatever they choose. 2009 saw the release of her second children’s book, What Does a Bee Do?

Career

At the age of two, Louise landed her first job in an advertisement for her father’s confectionery shop. At the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in Manhattan, she started training in acting, singing, and dancing under Sanford Meisner when she was seventeen years old.

1952 saw her make her stage debut in the Bette Davis musical revue Two’s Company. She then went on to play leading parts in numerous Broadway shows, including the popular musical Li’l Abner, John Murray Anderson’s Almanac, and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?

In 1958, Louise made her screen debut in God’s Little Acre. She was dubbed the “World’s Most Beautiful Redhead” by the National Art Council in the same year. She co-starred with Robert Ryan in Day of the Outlaw the following year.

She rose to prominence as a leading actress, often portraying somber parts, for actors like Richard Widmark and Robert Taylor.

She declined parts in the Operation Petticoat and Li’l Abner movies, accepting jobs instead on Broadway and in Italian cinema. Her Italian film credits include 1960’s Garibaldi and The Siege of Syracuse.

After coming back to the States, Louise joined the Actors Studio and started training under Lee Strasberg. She had a cameo appearance in the “Grandpa Pygmalion” episode of the situation comedy The Real McCoys in 1962, as a West Virginia farm girl.

Two years later, she costarred with Bob Denver in the beach party movie For Those Who Think Young (1964).

Subsequent film performances included a co-starring part in the indie satire Johnny Suede (1992), starring Brad Pitt, and the Robert Altman comedy O.C. and Stiggs (1987).

In the 1990 episode “Kelly Bounces Back” of the situation comedy Married… with Children, she played Miss Beck. 2014 saw Louise in two different films: Late Phases, a horror movie, and Tapestry, a spiritual drama.

Louise made a few brief cameos on talk shows and specials for Gilligan’s Island reunions, including Good Morning America (1982), The Late Show (1988), and the 2004 TV Land award show, even though she declined to appear in any of the three Gilligan’s Island reunion television films.

She reconnected with costars Bob Denver, Dawn Wells, and Russell Johnson in a Roseanne episode during the 1990s.

For the Wells-coproduced television movie Surviving Gilligan’s Island (2001), in which Kristen Dalton played Ginger, she did not reconnect with them.

Although there were rumors that her relationship with series actor Denver was strained, she penned a short, heartfelt remembrance of him in the year-end “farewell” edition of Entertainment Weekly in 2005, after his passing.

Louise recorded just one album, It’s Time for Tina, which was reissued on Urania Records in 1958 and 1959 after being first available on Concert Hall in 1957 (Concert Hall 1521).

The 12 songs include arrangements by Jim Timmens and Buddy Weed’s Orchestra, including hits like “Tonight Is the Night” and “I’m in the Mood for Love.” Tenor saxophone Coleman Hawkins is featured.

Two CD reissues of the album have been released; the most recent one was on the UK label Harkit Records. In 2012, the album was made available on iTunes. Although she only released one track for United Artists Records in 1958, she also recorded for that label.
