Childhood & Early Life

On December 6, 1992, Manziel was born in Tyler, Texas, parents Michelle Manziel (née Liberato) and Paul Manziel. Meri is the name of his younger sister.

Joseph, Manziel’s paternal great-great-grandfather, left Lebanon for the United States in 1907 and made his home in Louisiana. From his mother’s side, he is Italian.

Manziel played a range of sports as a child, such as baseball, golf, basketball, and football. His sports of choice at Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas, were football and baseball. On the other hand, he “achieved folk hero status” in football, according to coaches, parents, and sportswriters, and he was likened to quarterbacks like Brett Favre, Michael Vick, and Drew Brees.

Manziel played four years of high school football at Tivy High School, starting with the freshman squad in his first year. He was a receiver on the varsity team by the end of his rookie year.

The San Diego Padres selected Manziel as a shortstop in the 28th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft.

Manziel declared in January of 2014 that he will forgo his junior year and be selected in the 2014 NFL draft. His draft status was believed to be growing as of January 15, 2014, with a consensus of analysts having him projected as a first-round choice and as high as the top five pick.

On March 27, 2014, Manziel made the decision to throw on Texas A&M’s Pro Day as opposed to the NFL Combine. Manziel completed 64 out of 66 passes to six different receivers on his pro day. Sports media were impressed by his pro day performance.

He did not initially sign with the team. On September 2, Manziel’s representatives requested a contract offer from the Tiger-Cats.

According to CFL rules, the Tiger-Cats then had 10 days to offer Manziel a contract, trade his rights or relinquish his rights. However, the CFL later extended the 10-day window so that the league could “facilitate a process of evaluation for the player”. Manziel also had a meeting with CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie in September.

On July 22, after spending the first six weeks on Hamilton’s bench without playing, as backup to Jeremiah Masoli, the Tiger-Cats traded Manziel and offensive linemen Tony Washington and Landon Rice to the Montreal Alouettes for defensive lineman Jamaal Westerman, wide receiver Chris Williams, and Montreal’s 2020 and 2021 first-round draft picks. 

Hamilton coach June Jones stated Manziel was traded to give him a better chance at receiving playing time, while the development of quarterback Dane Evans was also a factor in the trade. On July 31, Alouettes head coach Mike Sherman announced that Manziel would start their August 3 game against the Tiger-Cats, his former team.

On March 16, 2019, Manziel signed an agreement to join the Alliance of American Football. Under the league’s regional allocation process, the San Antonio Commanders had the first opportunity to sign him via his Texas A&M connections, but the Commanders elected to waive his rights. 

As a result, he was assigned to the 1–5 Memphis Express through the waiver system, as the Express needed a quarterback to replace the injured Zach Mettenberger and the struggling Christian Hackenberg.

Manziel had an appearance in an episode of “Johnny Football,” the UNTOLD anthology series on Netflix, which debuted on August 8, 2023. The documentary was criticized by Sports Illustrated as “bizarre poorly done,” citing scenes where Manziel is seen drinking alcohol that “were not only bizarre but also made the lack of substance in the documentary glaringly obvious.” The magazine also criticized the film for its disjointed handling of Manziel’s recovery.

The brawl that led to these accusations happened in College Station, Texas, late at night. He entered a guilty plea to the allegation of failing to show identification in July 2013, and the other two accusations were dropped.

The NCAA was looking into whether Manziel took money for autographs he had signed in January 2013, according to an ESPN story on August 4.

Manziel’s marketing firm, LRMR, declared on January 6, 2016, that it will be ending its relationship with the player. Erik Burkhardt, Manziel’s agent, also declared that he would not be representing Manziel going forward.

The Dallas Police Department declared on February 5, 2016, that they would be initiating a criminal investigation into a possible case of domestic abuse involving his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley.

After being closed, the investigation was reopened by Dallas police on the basis of accusations arising from a fight that occurred at a downtown Dallas hotel on January 30, 2016. Crowley claimed Manziel grabbed her by the hair, threw her into a car, and threatened to murder her and himself.

The Browns decided to break things off with him because this incident was the final straw. A Dallas grand jury indicted Manziel on April 24 on misdemeanor assault counts related to the incident.
