Childhood & Early Life

The Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania is home to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where Mario Andretti, a four-time IndyCar champion and one-time Formula One champion, and his wife Dee Ann (née Hoch) welcomed him into the world on October 5, 1962. IndyCar racing was his brother Jeff Andretti’s sport.

Aldo Andretti, his uncle, raced open-wheel cars until an accident put a stop to it. John Andretti, the first cousin of Aldo, competed in IndyCar racing prior to becoming a NASCAR regular. He competed in the Indianapolis 500 when he returned to IndyCar in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Adam, Aldo’s second son, drives a race car.

Marco, his oldest son, debuted in the IndyCar Series in 2006. The five members of the Andretti family—Michael, Mario, Marco, Jeff, and John—became the first to participate in the same series (CART/Champ Car/IndyCar).

Following his graduation from Pennsylvania’s Nazareth Area High School, Andretti enrolled at Bethlehem’s Northampton Community College.

Andretti had two children with Sandra “Sandy” Spinozzi: a daughter named Marissa (born October 31, 1990) and a boy named Marco (born March 13, 1987). Career

Andretti transitioned into racing cars after having a fruitful career racing karts, taking home 50 of his 75 events in an eight-year span. After receiving his SCCA National Licence in 1980, he went on to win six races and the Formula Ford Northeast Division title in 1981. Additionally, he participated in several Formula Vee races at local SCCA competitions.

He won six of the eleven races in 1982, which helped him win the US Formula Super Vee Championship presented by Robert Bosch. Prior to moving up to drive in Formula Atlantic, he also won the first race of the 1983 Super Vee season. The next season, he won the FIA Formula Mondial North American Cup, which gave him his second title.

Andretti raced for the Kraco Enterprises squad when he made his CART debut in 1983. For the 1984 season, he joined up with Kraco again, and he finished his debut campaign in seventh position overall after five third-place results. He finished fifth in the Indianapolis 500 and split the Rookie of the Year honours with Roberto Guerrero.

In the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in 1986, he went on to win his maiden IndyCar race. The season turned into a race between Andretti and Bobby Rahal for the championship title. With his victory on the Milwaukee Mile, Andretti would take the lead in points.

The 1988 CART season was a lean year for Andretti. He remained with Kraco and won only a single race, the Marlboro Challenge, for which no championship points were awarded. For the 1989 season, Andretti signed with Newman/Haas Racing, partnering him with his father.

He won two races that season, Molson Indy Toronto and the 1989 Marlboro 500 at the Michigan International Speedway, placing third in points. For 1990, Al Unser Jr. would become champion, Andretti was his nearest competitor, winning five races and four poles.

Andretti was the drivers’ champion of the 1991 CART PPG Indy Car World Series. He won a total eight of 17 races, eight poles and led more than half of the laps during the season, but Rahal still took the championship battle down to the final race of the season. Andretti’s season started slowly, recording DNFs in the opening two events, then the heartbreaking second place at the Indy 500.

The Andretti curse refers to the Andretti family’s unlucky experiences at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In 1984, he finished sixth and shared Rookie of the Year accolades with Guerrero. He was leading in 1991 with twelve laps to go, but after battling the triple Indianapolis 500 winner, Rick Mears took the second place.

In Turn One, the two of them exchanged spectacular outside moves in the final lap for the lead. He dominated the race the next year, 1992, leading four-fifths of the laps. However, his fuel pump failed with 11 laps to go, causing his car to come to a stop. 13th place was assigned to him.

Andretti joined Marlboro McLaren for the 1993 season, joining forces with three-time World Drivers’ Champion Ayrton Senna in their Ford HBD V8-powered MP4/8. The agreement was revealed in Monza during the weekend of the 1992 Italian Grand Prix, and he signed during the summer of that year.

Andretti started the year with crashes at Kyalami and Interlagos as the pressure mounted. In the second of these two, he was involved in a severe early accident with a Ferrari driven by Gerhard Berger.

After that, he qualified sixth for the Sega European Grand Prix at Donington Park, but on the first lap, he ran into Karl Wendlinger’s Sauber.

Andretti returned to the IndyCar racing after his unsuccessful season in Formula One with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, where he once again proved successful. He went on to win in his very first race back in the series at the 1994 Australian FAI Indycar Grand Prix, around the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit in Queensland, Australia, having led every lap along the way.

That win also got Reynard’s first win in CART in their debut. He also won again in the Molson Indy Toronto, taking a record fourth win. By the time he retired, he would have won seven times around the Exhibition Place.

In 1995, Andretti returned to Newman/Haas Racing. Taking only one win in Toronto, he had a consistent season, scoring points in every round, which resulted in Andretti claiming fourth overall in the points standing.

The following season, he would finish as runner-up to Jimmy Vasser, in a season marred by the death of Jeff Krosnoff and split with Indy Racing League, visiting victory lane on five occasions.

Newman/Haas began a new relationship with Swift which did not prove to be very successful in 1997–1999. In 2000 the team used Lola chassis and Andretti won the Firestone Firehawk 300 held at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan, and again in Toronto.

Major Work/Filmography

After competing in the first four IRL races of 2003, which included the Indianapolis 500, Andretti decided to give up full-time IndyCar racing. After leading the race for 28 of the first 94 laps, a throttle linkage malfunction eliminated him from the race once more.

He supported the “Team Green” CART team that year, which is owned by brothers Kim and Barry Green. After changing its name to Andretti Green Racing, the team relocated to the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series in 2003. With Tony Kanaan and Dan Wheldon, respectively, winning 11 of the 17 races, including the Indianapolis 500, the team won the IndyCar Series in 2004 and 2005.

In an attempt to support his son Marco’s growth as an IndyCar rookie for the 2006 season, Andretti took the wheel again for the Indianapolis 500 in 2006. With four laps remaining, Andretti was leading the race; however, he lost the lead to his son one lap later.

Marco narrowly missed winning the 500 when three-time IndyCar champion Sam Hornish Jr. passed him on the final lap, right before the start/finish line. He went on to finish third. Andretti qualified his car for the 2007 Indianapolis 500 in eleventh place, and he ended up in thirteenth place. Afterwards, he said that this would be his final Indianapolis 500 as a driver.

The request that Andretti had made to the FIA to enter Formula 1 under the name “Andretti Global” was made public on February 18, 2022. On January 31, 2024, Formula One made the announcement that it had turned down Andretti’s most recent attempt to enter the competition by 2026, but that it would still consider an application from 2028.

In 1996, Andretti invested in a Toyota dealership in his home state of Pennsylvania. Among his personal appearances, Andretti appeared as a contestant on season 5 of the reality TV series The Celebrity Apprentice, which debuted in February 2012.

Andretti joined the show as a last-minute replacement for his son Marco, who dropped out when Marco’s friend Dan Wheldon was killed in the 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championship hours before Apprentice filming was scheduled to begin.

Andretti was fired in the fourth episode, after a presentation for Buick executives of the Buick Verano. In March 2012, Andretti Sports Marketing took over as promoter of the Milwaukee Mile IndyCar race. The company also promoted the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana, the Miami ePrix and the Global RallyCross Championship events at Washington and New York.
