Childhood & Early Life

On June 29, 1947, Lewis was born in Brooklyn. In Englewood, New Jersey, he was reared.Despite not being particularly religious, he was born into a Jewish household.

His mother, Blanche, was an actress in community theater, and his father, Bill (d. 1971), was a co-owner of Ambassador Caterers in neighboring Teaneck, New Jersey.Lewis was the youngest of three siblings.

His brother was six years older than his sister, who was nine years older.Due to his father’s hectic catering company and the fact that both of his siblings had moved out by the 1960s, Lewis was living alone at home with his mother, with whom he had strained relations.Lewis expressed his suspicion that his birth was an error to The Washington Post in 2014.

Lewis was well-known for stirring up trouble in the classroom and being the class clown.Following his 1965 graduation from Dwight Morrow High School, he enrolled at Ohio State University, where he studied marketing and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1969.

Career

In 1971, Lewis gave stand-up comedy its first go at a Greenwich Village open mic. In 1972, he started writing and doing stand-up comedy regularly while working during the day as a copywriter for an advertising agency.

Comedian David Brenner happened upon him as he was doing a show in Greenwich Village. By introducing Lewis to Los Angeles’s comedy clubs and securing his first performance on The Tonight Show, Brenner aided Lewis’s career.

In 1979, Lewis made his on-screen debut as an actor in the 90-minute film Diary of a Young Comic, which aired on NBC during a space typically occupied by Saturday Night Live episodes. Lewis plays Billy Gondola (born Gondolstein), a young Jewish comedian who moves from New York City to Los Angeles in search of success.

The movie offers a sarcastic look at the Hollywood industry. Co-writers Lewis and Bennett Tramer wrote the screenplay for the movie, which was based on a narrative by Gary Weis, who also directed it.

He costarred with Jamie Lee Curtis in the sitcom Anything but Love from 1989 until 1992. In addition, he starred in two brief sitcoms: Hiller and Diller (1998) starring Kevin Nealon, and Daddy Dearest (1993) starring Don Rickles.

In the 1993 drama film Robin Hood: Men in Tights, he portrayed Prince John, and in the 1995 drama film Drunks, he played a struggling alcoholic and drug user. Based on Gary Lennon’s play Blackout, the latter movie starred Faye Dunaway, George Martin, Parker Posey, Howard Rollins, Spalding Gray, and Dianne Wiest.

Lewis also starred in Hugo Pool, a 1997 romantic comedy, and the 1995 drama picture Leaving Las Vegas. Lewis continued to have recurrent appearances throughout the 2000s, first on the sitcom Rude Awakening as a B movie producer and then on the family drama series 7th Heaven as Rabbi Richard Glass.

He also played a semi-autobiographical version of himself in a recurrent role on the sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm. At summer camp in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, Lewis first met the show’s star and creator, Larry David. The two were twelve years old at the time, and Lewis claimed that at the time, they disliked each other.

Lewis, a former user of cocaine and crystal meth, was candid about his journey to recovery from alcohol and drug misuse. Lewis’s addictions grew worse in the 1990s, and he had to give up stand-up comedy from 1991 to 1994.

Lewis talked about how his reflections on his own life and work had been prompted by John Candy’s death the previous year in a 1995 interview with the Santa Maria Times.

Together, they starred in Candy’s final motion picture, the Western-themed comedy Wagons East. Lewis said in subsequent interviews that he became sober in 1994 as a result of ending up in the emergency room of a hospital after overdosing on cocaine.

Lewis’s memoir, The Other Great Depression, was released in 2000. In 2008, the book was reprinted with an additional afterword by Lewis that went into further detail on his ongoing battles with addiction.

His book Reflections from Hell: Richard Lewis’ Guide on How Not to Live, which was published in 2015, is filled with his observations and commentary in the form of one-liners and other humorous ideas, intermingled with artwork by Carl Nicholas Titolo.

A recurring theme of Lewis’s comedy was his fight with anxiety and depression, as well as his numerous therapy sessions. Additionally, he acknowledged in interviews that his bodily dysmorphia was the cause of his eating issue.

Lewis had several surgeries as a result of his health problems. He fell from his roof in 2016, breaking his right hand; in 2019, he underwent back surgery for severe back pain; and early in 2020, he broke his shoulder, necessitating yet another operation.

It was discovered during that year that Lewis had suffered greatly while filming Curb Your Enthusiasm due to a number of health problems. He declared that he will only be making a cameo in a single Season 11 episode. In Season 12, the last season of the show, Lewis made a comeback.
