Childhood & Early Life
As the son of Ed Kelce, a sales representative for the steel industry, and Donna Kelce, a bank employee, Kelce was born and raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He is the older brother of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
He played linebacker and running back at Cleveland Heights High School, where he was twice selected an All-Lake Erie League player. He was a baritone saxophonist in the jazz and symphonic bands at Cleveland Heights. In high school, Kelce participated in lacrosse and hockey as well.
After redshirting his first year at the University of Cincinnati (UC), Kelce, a former walk-on running back, moved to fullback and then, finally, to offensive line. He saw action at center and guard in nine games in 2007 as the Bearcats went 10–3 and defeated Southern Mississippi 31–21 in the PapaJohns.com Bowl.
Along with future NFL guards Jeff Linkenbach and Trevor Canfield, he started 13 games at left guard as a sophomore in 2008, helping the UC offense average 27.3 points and 375.3 yards of total offense per game.
The Bearcats finished with an overall record of 11–3, won the Big East Conference, and participated in the FedEx Orange Bowl, where they were defeated by Virginia Tech 20–7.
After starting 13 games at left guard, Kelce was named to the 2009 Big East second team. The Bearcats finished the regular season unbeaten (12-0), secured a trip to the BCS Bowl, and lost to Florida 51–24 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
For his last season in 2010, he was switched to center as the Bearcats finished 4–8 under new coach Butch Jones. In his 47-game career with the Bearcats, he started 38 games as a starter, 26 at left guard and 12 at center. He was selected to the second team of the Big East and Honorable Mention All-America.

Career
Though Kelce lacked genuine NFL size, he was predicted to be selected in the fourth round. In 4.89 seconds, he ran the fastest 40-yard sprint of any offensive lineman at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine. Kelce underwent an appendectomy on March 11, 2011, following his diagnosis of appendicitis.
The Philadelphia Eagles selected Kelce in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL draft (191st overall). It was not until the NFL lockout ended on July 25, 2011, that Kelce could resume practice or negotiate a contract.
On July 27, he agreed to a four-year contract. Howard Mudd, the new offensive line coach, saw Kelce as a player similar to Jeff Saturday, the five-time Pro Bowl center for the Indianapolis Colts, who Mudd coached for eleven seasons in Indianapolis.
In 2012, Kelce was named the starting center for the second consecutive year. On September 16, he suffered a partially torn MCL and a torn ACL in a win over the Baltimore Ravens. Kelce would miss the rest of the 2012 season.
In the 2013 season, Kelce started all 16 games. The Eagles reached the playoffs, and set team season records of 442 points and 6,676 yards. He led the way for the NFL’s leading rusher, LeSean McCoy, who rushed for 1,607 yards.
Kelce was graded by Pro Football Focus (PFF) as the best center in the NFL for the season. He was also honored with the Ed Block Courage Award.
On February 27, 2014, Kelce agreed to a six-year, $37.5 million contract extension, with $13 million guaranteed, according to agent Jason Bernstein. On September 23, Kelce underwent surgery for a sports hernia and missed four games. Despite missing time, he was selected to his first Pro Bowl.
In 2018, Kelce was given his second First-team All-Pro honor. On March 2, 2019, Kelce signed a one-year contract extension with the Eagles through the 2021 season. During the 2019 season, Kelce was elected to his third Pro Bowl and received his third straight First-team All-Pro Honor.
In Super Bowl LVII, Kelce and the Eagles faced the Kansas City Chiefs. It was the first time that two siblings on opposite teams participated in the Super Bowl when Travis, Kelce’s brother, was a player with the Chiefs. The Eagles would end up losing 38–35.
