Childhood & Early Life
Born in the Bronx, New York City, on January 1, 2000, Isis Naija Gaston grew up in the Fordham Road neighborhood. The eldest of her five siblings is her.
She is mixed-race; her mother, Charina Almanzar, is Dominican, worked at a car dealership, and gave birth to Gaston when she was seventeen.
Her father, Joseph Gaston, is African-American and was once an underground rapper. When Gaston was two years old, the couple got divorced after initially meeting at a McDonald’s.
Due to her parents’ frequent work commitments, she spent a significant portion of her childhood in the company of her grandparents and cousins. She attended school in the Bronx until she was enrolled in Sacred Heart High School, a Catholic institution in Yonkers.
At the age of seven, she developed an affinity for hip-hop, inspired by artists like Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj. Throughout her elementary and high school years, she immersed herself in the world of hip-hop, writing poetry and freestyle raps.
In an interview with Billboard, Ice Spice revealed that her father’s rap background exposed her to the music of Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Wu-Tang Clan.
She would transcribe lyrics into the Notes app on her iPhone, engaging with hip-hop instrumentals by rapping aloud.
Reflecting on her inspiration, Ice Spice recalled being captivated by Nicki Minaj, the first female rapper she ever encountered, shaping her determination to pursue a similar path.
The choice of “Ice Spice” as her stage name was made during her freshman year of high school.
