Drake Aubrey On October 24, 1986, Graham was born in Toronto, Ontario. Dennis Graham, his father, is a Memphis-born African-American drummer who formerly shared the stage with Jerry Lee Lewis.

His mother, Sandra “Sandi” Graham (née Sher), is an Ashkenazi Jew from Canada who has held positions as a florist and an English teacher. Sandra was there for Graham’s performance at Club Bluenote in Toronto when they first met.

Drake has dual citizenship in the US and Canada; his US citizenship comes from Graham. He got a bar mitzvah and went to a Jewish day school throughout his boyhood.

When Drake was five years old, his parents separated. Following the divorce, he and his mother stayed in Toronto, while his father moved back to Memphis and spent many years behind bars due to drug-related offences.

Graham stayed in the United States until Drake was a young adult due to his tight finances and legal troubles. Every summer, before he was arrested, Graham would take Drake to Memphis from Toronto. Drake adamantly disputes Graham’s allegation in an interview that his claims of being an absent parent were made up to promote his songs.

Teenie Hodges and Larry Graham are two composers and musicians who are Drake’s paternal uncles. Hodges wrote songs for Al Green, such as “Take Me to the River,” “Here I Am (Come and Take Me),” and “Love and Happiness.” Graham was a member of Sly and the Family Stone.

He was in an intermittent relationship with Rihanna from 2009 to 2016, and he dated SZA from 2008 to 2009. As he presented Rihanna with the 2016 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, he said, “She’s a woman I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old.” He has brought up the relationship in all of his studio albums.

Career

Drake met the father of a classmate from high school who was an acting agent when he was fifteen. In the Canadian adolescent drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation, he helped Drake get a part as Jimmy Brooks, a basketball player who was shot by a classmate and thus became physically crippled. In response to a question about his early acting career, Drake said, “My mother was very sick.”

We were absolutely broke. The only source of income I had was Canadian television.” Showrunners Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn said that Drake often came late to the set after spending the night in the studio making songs.

Schuyler said that Drake made a deal with the security personnel on the set to enable him access after filming and the right to sleep in a dressing room to avoid this.

Drake’s debut single “Over” was released on March 9, 2010, and it became the number one song on the Rap Songs list and the fourteenth most popular song on the Billboard Hot 100. It was nominated for a 53rd Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

“Find Your Love,” his second hit, went on to become even more successful. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it 3× Multi-Platinum, and it peaked at number five on the Hot 100.

Edmund Bartlett, the minister of tourism for Jamaica, chastised the music video for the tune, which was filmed in Kingston. The third and fourth songs, “Miss Me” and “Fancy,” respectively, had a middling level of commercial success.

However, Drake received his second nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 53rd Grammy Awards thanks to the latter track.

Drake released four songs on July 31, 2015: “Right Hand,” “Hotline Bling,” “Charged Up,” and “Back to Back.” A joint mixtape by Drake and Future, recorded in less than a week in Atlanta, was released on September 20.

Drake became the first hip-hop artist since 2004 to have two albums debut at number one in the same year when What a Time to Be Alive arrived at the top of the Billboard 200. In January 2016, Drake said that his fourth studio album will be out in the spring, along with the release of the first song “Summer Sixteen” later in the same month. The album was subsequently trimmed to Views from the 6, which was its original title.

Drake released the song “War” on December 24, 2019, and it quickly gained popularity due to its instrumental that was reminiscent of UK drill. He said that he was working on finishing his sixth studio album the next day.

He released the song “Toosie Slide” on April 3 along with a music video that showcases a dance that was made in collaboration with social media personality Toosie. Drake became the first male artist to have three singles launch at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 when it debuted at number one.

Drake’s commercial mixtape Dark Lane Demo Tapes, including cameos by Chris Brown, Future, Young Thug, Fivio Foreign, Playboi Carti, and Sosa Geek, was released on May 1, 2020.

The mixtape includes an assortment of recently released music and recordings that were discovered online. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and number two on the US Billboard 200, despite receiving mixed reviews.

In addition, Drake said that the summer of 2020 will see the release of his sixth studio album. Slated to be the first single off the forthcoming album Certified Lover Boy, “Laugh Now Cry Later” with Lil Durk was released on August 14 but was left off the final track list.

It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song and made its Hot 100 debut at number two. Drake said that Certified Lover Boy will be out in January 2021 on his 34th birthday. Later, when he suffered a significant knee injury, this was postponed.

From 2012 until 2022, he was the owner of the “YOLO Estate” in Hidden Hills, California. He is the owner of a condo close to the CN Tower. In 2021, he leased a $65 million multipurpose home in Beverly Hills and he also owns a Boeing 767.

Controversy

In Toronto’s Little Italy neighbourhood on May 31, 2009, Drake was forced to give over a $2,000 Audemars Piguet watch, a gold and diamond necklace, and other valuables after being robbed at gunpoint.

At first, Soccerties Cotterell and Paul Lelutiu faced charges of armed robbery, armed robbery conspiracy, three firearm-pointing offences, and possession of pilfered goods. With the exception of conspiracy to conduct armed robbery, which the guys entered a guilty plea to, all charges were ultimately withdrawn.

They received a term of time served, which was little more than six months in prison. Mesha Collins was arrested in April 2017 for criminal trespass after breaking into Drake’s Calabasas house.

Collins filed a $4 billion lawsuit against Drake in June 2021 for defamation, but it was dropped in December of the same year, without any criminal charges being pursued. Afterwards, in March 2022, Drake requested a restraining order against Collins, and in April, the order was approved.

An unnamed lady with a knife was taken into custody in March 2021 after an unsuccessful attempt to break into Drake’s Toronto residence. A guy was detained in January 2023 after breaking into Drake’s Los Angeles residence.

In June 2012, Drake and his group reportedly tossed glass bottles at Chris Brown at a SoHo nightclub in Manhattan, New York City, leading to a violent brawl. Regarding the event, Chris Brown tweeted, and up until 2013, he chastised Drake in songs, like as the “R.I.P.” remix.

Drake did not respond, but he and Brown did perform in a humorous skit for the 2014 ESPY Awards, and they practiced the sketch together before it was shown on television, thereby putting a stop to the argument. Later in 2019, the two worked together on “No Guidance“.

Diddy assaulted Drake after another confrontation in December 2014 outside of Miami, Florida’s LIV nightclub. The argument was reportedly started by Drake’s use of the instrumental for “0 to 100 / The Catch Up,” which was purportedly created by Boi-1da for Diddy before Drake used it for himself.

Following the argument, Drake aggravated an earlier arm injury, which prompted an emergency room visit. Tyga‘s disparaging remarks about Drake in an interview with Vibe magazine also led to a conflict between the two.

Later, Drake would reply on “6 God” and “6 PM in New York,” which has been seen as having a direct bearing on Tyga’s sudden departure from Young Money Entertainment.

When Meek Mill claimed in July 2015 that Drake had hired ghostwriters during the production of “RICO,” one of the main songs off Mill’s second studio album, further controversy ensued.

This led to further claims that Drake had little to do with the album’s marketing since Mill had found the ghostwriter, who was largely thought to be Quentin Miller. Miller and Drake had worked together in the past, and Mill said that Miller was the one who wrote Drake’s verse for “R.I.C.O.“
