Career
Williams started performing comedy in the Avondale neighborhood of Cincinnati. He honed his comic delivery by performing his routine in clubs around the country and had become an established comic by 1999, appearing at the likes of The Improv, The Comedy Club, The Ice House, and Hollywood Park Casino.
Most notably, he appeared on BET’s ComicView as Katt “N da Hatt” Williams. Williams starred in his first comedy special, Let a Playa Play, in 2006. His first HBO stand-up special came in 2006 with The Pimp Chronicles, Pt. 1.
In 2007, he co-wrote and starred as himself in the comedy film Katt Williams: American Hustle. The film had critical success and established Williams as a mainstream comedian. In 2008, he released his second HBO comedy special, It’s Pimpin’ Pimpin’.
In 2012, Williams made a comeback to stand-up for his third HBO comedy special, Kattpacalypse, following a four-year break.
Later that year, he proclaimed the end of his stand-up comedy career, the day after an altercation at a club in Seattle where he allegedly acted violently and threateningly before resisting arrest and ending up in jail. But he declared three days later that he would not be retiring.
In November 2012, Williams’s aggressive demeanor caused two live concerts to terminate early. His concert at the Denver Wells Fargo Theatre on November 1 came to an abrupt end when he leaped off the stage to address an instigator. Williams got into a foul-mouthed argument with a heckler during his performance on November 16 at Oakland’s Oracle Arena.
On October 29, 2002, during the sixth episode of the tenth season of NYPD Blue, Williams made his acting debut. Williams has portrayed supporting roles in the movies First Sunday (2008) and Norbit (2007), but his most well-known role was Money Mike in Friday After Next (2002).
In 2003, he made an appearance in the official music video for the single “Gigolo” by Nick Cannon. For the next three seasons of MTV’s Wild ‘n Out, he made regular appearances.
Williams voiced A Pimp Named Slickback in the 2007 television series The Boondocks. In Grand Theft Auto IV, he plays himself as a stand-up comedian who performs a variety of jokes, including a shortened version of one from Katt Williams: American Hustle.
Williams has also rapped for songs by musicians like Baby Bash, The Game, and Suga Free under the stage name “Money Mike”. He joined rapper Cam’ron’s group The Diplomats in 2006, however the label never officially signed him as an artist.
It’s Pimpin’ Pimpin’, his debut studio/live album, was released on January 29, 2009. Due to remarks made by Atlanta rapper Trinidad James regarding the quality of contemporary hip-hop music, he and Hell Rell released a diss song titled “Lames in the Game” on November 19, 2013.
