Childhood & Early Life
The youngest of Shirley Conklin’s (1932–2016) three sons, Schneider was born in Mount Kisco, New York, on April 8, 1960. His parents were John “Jack” Schneider III (1930–2013), a pilot in the United States Air Force, and Shirley Conklin. Sanford, Florida is where his mother comes from.
Robert, his elder brother, is an artist who resides in southern New York. Three years before to John’s birth, his other brother, also named John, passed away at the age of three from lung failure.
At eight years old, John started doing magic performances for his friends and their families, marking the beginning of his career as an entertainer.
This once led him into problems since he tried to recreate the renowned escape performance of Harry Houdini by getting himself locked up and thrown into a swimming pool.
His passion of performing continued after he and his mother relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, when he was fourteen. In Sandy Springs, Georgia, he attended North Springs High School.
From 1983 until 1986, Schneider was wed to Tawny Elaine Godin, a former Miss America. On July 11, 1993, he wed Elvira “Elly” Castle, his second wife. Career
At the age of 18, he won the role of Bo Duke, working alongside another newcomer Tom Wopat and veteran actor James Best. For his audition, he “borrowed a dilapidated pickup truck, put on a big ol’ country accent and funky hat.
I hadn’t shaved and went in toting a beer. I don’t know whether they believed it or not, but they liked it.” Schneider learned to drive the iconic Dodge Charger in the show, but to the disappointment of many fans, he admitted he never jumped the car due to the dangerous nature of the stunt.
In 2001, he portrayed Jonathan Kent, the adoptive father of Clark Kent on Smallville, starring in 100 episodes. Schneider directed some episodes of Smallville, including “Talisman“.
