Childhood & Early Life

On April 1, 1980, Randal Keith Orton was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to professional wrestler Bob Orton Jr. and nurse Elaine.

He is the nephew of professional wrestler Barry Orton and the grandson of professional wrestler Bob Orton. He has a younger sister, Rebecca, and a younger brother, Nathan, who does stand-up comedy.

His father cautioned him that life in the ring meant a life on the road and away from home, and his parents attempted to talk him out of the industry since they were aware of the challenges associated with being a professional wrestler.

Orton wrestled amateur wrestling while attending Hazelwood Central High School. In 1998, he enrolled in the Marines after his graduation.

He was given a poor conduct discharge from the base in 1999 for going missing more than twice and for defying a superior officer’s orders. He was tried and found guilty by a special court-martial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

He was then imprisoned in the brig for 38 days at Camp Pendleton. His left arm used to have a tattoo of a Marine, but he covered it up after being discharged for misbehavior.

Samantha Speno and Orton were wed on September 21, 2007. Together, the couple gave birth to a girl. They were divorced in June 2013 after parting ways in late 2012.

Kimberly Kessler, a former fan club member of Orton’s, wed him on November 14, 2015. Together, the pair has a daughter, who is also Otto’s second child. They live in Missouri’s St. Charles.

Due to hypermobility in both shoulders, which has been the root of almost all of his injuries throughout the course of his career, Orton has been sidelined for anything from harmless tasks like taking out the garbage at home to engaging in one of his trademark taunts during a game.

Career

At the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Association-Southern Illinois Conference Wrestling (MMWA-SICW) in St. Louis, Missouri, Randy Orton started his professional wrestling career in 2000.

Both Bob Orton Jr., the father, and the staff trained him. He became a member of the World Wrestling Federation in 2001 and was sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) in Louisville, Kentucky, for training.

He defeated Mr. Black and Flash Flanagan twice to win the OVW Hardcore Championship during his training session at OVW.

In 2002, Orton made his TV wrestling debut on Smackdown, when he beat Hardcore Holly, marking the start of his professional wrestling career.

Triple H, Batista, Ric Flair, and Orton teamed together to create Evolution. When Evolution won every men’s championship on Raw in 2003, they controlled the WWE throughout that period.

Orton began to establish himself as a major player in the industry after repeatedly assisting Triple H in winning the World Championship. Along with calling himself a “legend killer,” Orton had feuds with Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, and Hulk Hogan, among other big names.

He was categorized as an A-list wrestler since he had won a singles bout against Foley and Michaels early in his career.

Orton gained notoriety at Summerslam when, at the age of 24, he accomplished the seemingly impossible by defeating Chris Benoit to become the youngest world champion in WWE history.

During a fictitious celebration of his momentous triumph, Orton was deceived by The Evolution after winning the world championship. In order to confront Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship, Triple H used Pedigree on him.

Orton’s belt was lost to Triple H at Unforgiven after intervention by Jonathan Coachman, Flair, and Batista. Orton competed in an elimination chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship at New Year’s Revolution in January 2005.

Ric Flair and Batista interfered, and Orton lost to Triple H. Against Triple H at the Royal Rumble for the World Heavyweight Championship, Orton experienced loss once again.

Known as the “legend killer” in the WWE, Randy Orton was unable to resist becoming involved in a rivalry with The Undertaker that culminated in their encounter at Wrestlemania 21, in which The Deadman defeated him.

After nine months in the Hell in a Cell match, when Taker defeated both of the Ortons, the two’s rivalry came to an end.

Orton was defeated by Mysterio in the world championship match at Wrestlemania 22 in 2006, and he was unable to regain the belt thereafter.

Conversely, Edge’s opportunity to win the WWE championship title was ruined by the newly created D-Generation-X. Edge went over to Orton and begged him to put them down as a tag team.

After Triple H had ended Orton’s title run in 2004, the two came together to create the tag team Rated-RKO. Rated RKO and DX competed for the Tag Team Championship at New Year’s Revolution; however, Triple H’s injuries during the match led to the match being ruled a no-contest.

Triple H was sidelined, but Rated-RKO and Michaels continued their on-screen battle. In the contest between the top contenders for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania 23, Edge and Orton gave it their all, but Michaels triumphed over both of them.

The vicious and sly manner in which Randy Orton attacked like a snake earned him the moniker “The Viper.”

In 2007, Orton was given the chance to challenge Cena for the WWE Title, however, Cena’s execution of AA on Orton ended in a loss. Following Cena’s injury, Orton was given the WWE Championship by Mr. McMahon at the No Mercy pay-per-view.

In the first bout, Orton was defeated by Triple H for the championship, but in the main event match of Last Man Standing, he won it back.

He had rivalries with Shawn Michaels, Jeff Hardy, John Cena, JBL, Big Show, and most significantly, Triple H, when he was the WWE Champion in 2007–2008.

Between 2008 and 2010, Orton played one of his most shrewd on-screen personas in the WWE. At that moment, Orton started his rivalry with the McMahon family and used an RKO on each member of the family.

Along with Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes, he founded the Legacy group, and with their help, he won the 2009 Royal Rumble. He lost the bout against Triple H when he challenged him for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania 25.

With the help of Legacy, Orton defeated Triple H at Backlash and went on to successfully defend his championship against both him and Batista.

After successfully defending the championship against John Cena at SummerSlam, he lost it to Cena in an “I Quit” match at Breaking Point, but he eventually won it back from Cena in a Hell in a Cell match.

To put a stop to the rivalry, Orton once again lost the belt to Cena in an hour-long Iron Man battle at Bragging Rights.

At Night of Champions, Randy Orton won the WWE Championship for the sixth time, defeating John Cena, Chris Jericho, Wade Barrett, Edge, and Sheamus in a Six-Pack Challenge Elimination Match.

After cashing in his Money in the Bank contract to win the WWE Championship, Orton dropped the belt to The Miz. Orton’s rivalry with CM Punk, the head of New Nexus, began. When they faced off at Wrestlemania 27, he won the match by submitting Punk with a mid-air RKO.

For the second time, Orton was victorious in the World Heavyweight Championship match against Christian.

After that, Orton and Mark Henry began their on-screen feud. He was defeated by Henry for the World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions, and two weeks later, at Hell in a Cell, he was unable to win it back.

From 2010 through 2012, Orton competed for the World Heavyweight Championship in the WWE.

In 2013, Orton won the Money in the Bank competition. In order to cash in on his Money in the Bank deal with Daniel Bryan—who had just won the WWE Championship—Triple H played the villain against Bryan at SummerSlam.

Referee Triple H, a special guest, counted the pinfall to award Orton his sixth WWE championship.

After World Champion John Cena challenged WWE Champion Randy Orton, saying there should only be “one champion” in the company, Triple H announced a unified WWE championship fight for the TLC pay-per-view.

In addition to being the inaugural WWE World Heavyweight Champion and the acknowledged last World Heavyweight Champion, Orton beat Cena at TLC to unify both championships.

When Randy Orton, Triple H, and Batista got back together in 2014 to form Evolution against The Shield, they lost the single pay-per-view match, which led to Batista’s second WWE departure.

In 2016, Orton also became a member of the Wyatt Family and began a rivalry with Lesnar. During their Summerslam match, Lesnar defeated Orton with a series of elbow strikes to the head, leaving Orton with an open wound that needed ten staples.

For the longest period, Orton was a staunch supporter of Bray Wyatt and a member of the Wyatt Family. But at Wrestlemania 33, he turned the tables on Wyatt by challenging him to a match for the WWE Championship.

Consequently, Orton overcame Wyatt to win The Grandest Stage of them all thirteen times.

After defeating Bobby Roode to win the United States Championship, Orton became the 18th Grandslam champion.

The onscreen rivalry between Orton and WWE Champion Kofi Kingston is presently in place. He is excited to compete for the WWE Championship at Clash of Champions, but there has been no official confirmation as of yet.

Additionally, Orton made his way into the acting world, landing the main part in the 2009 action movie The Marine 2. Ted Dibiase, however, took Orton’s position when the actor had a collarbone injury.

Later, Orton acted in two action films, The Condemned 2 (2015) and 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded (2013). In December 2016, he contributed to the premiere of the new series Shooter on USA Network.

Controversy

As part of an ongoing series, Sports Illustrated published a piece on its website in March 2007 that looked into a steroid and growth hormone ring that many elite sportsmen in different sports utilized.

Numerous WWE wrestlers, both past and present, were referenced in the piece. Among them was Orton, who was accused of obtaining testosterone, stanozolol, oxandrolone, and nandrolone along with auxiliary medications like anastrozole and clomiphene citrate.

WWE only said that the claims were made before their February 2006 Talent Wellness Programme introduction.

When allegations surfaced in August 2018 that Orton had exposed himself to new writers for the business in his early career, the WWE launched a sexual harassment inquiry into the matter. However, the investigation resulted in nothing.

In 2018, Catherine Alexander, the tattoo artist for Orton, filed a lawsuit against Take-Two Interactive and 2K Games for using her trademarked tattoos on his visage without permission in their WWE 2K video game franchise.

As the authorized inventor, she claimed that the tattoos’ duplication violated her rights. Take-Two argued for fair use; the court dismissed the company’s petition for summary judgment on the copying problem but granted Alexander’s motion for the same.

This left fair use as the sole issue to be tried since there was a significant disagreement on that point.

A September 2021 study was originally planned, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced a postponement. The trial was held in October 2022, and Alexander was awarded $3,750 in damages by the court when the jury found it in her favor.

When Orton called someone a “nigga” while playing Call of Duty on a live Twitch feed in October 2019, the comment was met with backlash.
