Childhood & Early Life
Kyrie Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia, on March 23, 1992, to Drederick and Elizabeth Irving, American expatriates. He has an older sister named Asia and a younger half-sister named London. His father, Drederick, played college basketball at Boston University alongside Shawn Teague, father of NBA players Jeff and Marquis Teague.
After his college career, Drederick moved to Australia to play professionally for the Bulleen Boomers in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL). The family lived in the Melbourne suburb of Kew before moving to the United States when Kyrie was two years old.
Irving holds both American and Australian citizenship. Although born left-handed, he was discouraged from using his left hand while attending a Catholic school in 1996.
Irving’s mother, who was African American and of Lakota heritage, passed away from an illness when he was four years old. His father raised him with the help of Irving’s aunts. In 2004, Drederick remarried Shetellia Riley, who later became Kyrie’s agent.

Career
Irving began his high school basketball career at Montclair Kimberley Academy, where he played during his freshman and sophomore years. During his time there, he averaged 26.5 points, 10.3 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per game, becoming only the second player in the school’s history to score over 1,000 points.
In his sophomore year, Irving led the team to its first New Jersey Prep ‘B’ state title. Following that season, he transferred to St. Patrick High School, seeking a greater challenge. Due to transfer rules, he had to sit out the first 30 days of the season.
At St. Patrick, he played alongside Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who was considered one of the best players in the 2011 class.

Hours after Irving refused to issue the apology that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver sought for posting a link to an antisemitic work on his Twitter feed, the Nets said that Irving is “currently unfit to be associated with the Brooklyn Nets.”
“We were dismayed today, when given an opportunity in a media session, that Kyrie refused to unequivocally say he has no antisemitic beliefs nor acknowledge specific hateful material in the film. This was not the first time he had the opportunity — but failed — to clarify,” the Nets said in a statement.
“Such failure to disavow antisemitism when given a clear opportunity to do so is deeply disturbing, is against the values of our organization, and constitutes conduct detrimental to the team. Accordingly, we are of the view that he is currently unfit to be associated with the Brooklyn Nets.”
Irving did finally apologize later in an Instagram post for not explaining the specific beliefs he agreed and disagreed with when he posted the documentary.
“To All Jewish families and communities that are hurt and affected from my post, I am deeply sorry to have caused you pain, and I apologize,” Irving wrote. “I initially reacted out of emotion to being unjustly labeled Anti-Semitic, instead of focusing on the healing process of my Jewish Brothers and Sisters that were hurt from the hateful remarks made in the Documentary.”
