Controversy
Joel Dahmen labeled Sung Kang a cheater three years ago. On Sunday at Pebble Beach, the two were in the same group for the first time since the Quicken Loans National, when Dahmen accused Kang of taking a bad drop on purpose.
After getting a text from the PGA Tour indicating he’d be teeing off No. 10 at 9:56 a.m., Dahmen could only tweet a scared emoji on Saturday evening.
Dahmen finished with a 72, one better than Kang’s 73. In terms of the chat, Dahmen’s caddy, Geno Bonnalie, later tweeted that Kang broke the ice early.
“My friends told me I should push you off a cliff,” Kang allegedly remarked on the first tee.
“Joel laughed,” Bonnalie said. Everything was fine.”
It was a far cry from three years earlier when Dahmen and Kang fought for almost a half-hour after Kang hooked his second shot into a hazard during the final round at TPC Potomac and then took a drop 170 yards closer to the hole than Dahmen thought the ball had last crossed into the hazard.
“Kang cheated,” Dahmen tweeted afterward. “He took a bad hazard drop,” I argued until I was blue in the face. I lost.” While Kang and Dahmen would chat about the event individually in the following weeks, it would be five weeks before they spoke again, Dahmen said last May on Golf.com’s Subpar Podcast.
“He goes, ‘Joel, I want you to apologize to me,'” Dahmen recalled. “‘Apologise to me?’ I responded. Look around; you owe an apology to everyone else in that sector. You took their money. You accomplished everything.’ We simply kept apologizing back and forth till he said, ‘You did this; you wrecked my reputation,’ and I said, ‘You did this to yourself; I didn’t do this.'”
Dahmen said, “We have not spoken since.”
Until Sunday, that is.
