Early exposure to music came through neighborhood gospel organizations, and at the age of just 11, he began playing the guitar.

Elvis had to grow up alone because his twin brother Jesse was sadly stillborn at birth. Elvis’ early years were not easy.

Elvis, who was born during the Great Depression, struggled to find a job as a child and lived in poverty. He frequently recalled growing up in a modest two-room shotgun house.

Elvis finished fifth in a talent competition at the Alabama-Mississippi State Fair when he was ten years old.

His mother accompanied him to the shop to get his first guitar for his birthday that year.

He spent a few years taking guitar lessons and developed a love for both singing and playing the guitar, yet he was too bashful to perform in front of others.

Early in Presley’s adolescence, his parents relocated the family to Memphis, Tennessee. There, Elvis’ passion for music began to blossom.

Elvis attributed his musical taste and voice to the gospel songs he sang at church. Pop, country, and R&B were also musical genres that influenced him.

He made his debut on television during the Louisiana Hayride broadcast on KSLA-TV, and by 1955, he had established himself as a regular performer.

People began to talk about the young artist because of his infamous “leg shake” dancing. As his song “Heartbreak Hotel” went to number one in 1956, the singer’s fame skyrocketed.

When sixty million people watched Elvis perform on The Ed Sullivan Show, he became a household name (1956).

Only Elvis’ waist up was displayed because his dancing was thought to be too suggestive. He received nearly a million advance orders for the song “Love Me Tender” after performing it.

The well-known Presley was granted the moniker “King of Rock and Roll” following his live performance. From that point on, his notoriety grew, and everyone was talking about the performance and his brand-new dance and musical aesthetic.

The National Guard was called in to manage the massive number of fans while a performer appeared at a state fair.

Even though he was loved by millions, his dancing and music were quite divisive at the time. Also, he raised controversial racial and societal themes through his music.

Elvis was enlisted in the US Army in March 1958. Presley was given a two-week furlough after completing basic training, during which time he recorded five brand-new songs in Nashville.

Controversy

The most controversial moment in Elvis’s career comes from his June 1956 performance on The Milton Berle Show.

While singing “Hound Dog,” Elvis displayed his provocative side through the pelvis-shaking moves that left his fanbase in shambles.

Elvis Presley and his controversial moves

In 1956, Elvis spoke with TV Guide about his dance moves and revealed his hatred for the nickname “Elvis the Pelvis.”

“I don’t roll my — what they call ‘pelvic gyrations‘ — my pelvis has nothing to do with what I do,” Elvis told the outlet. “I just — I get a rhythm with the music. I jump around to it because I enjoy what I’m doing.”

He added, “I’m not trying to be vulgar, not trying to [simulate] sex. I just do a lot of wigglin’ and quiverin’, but I never do a bump or grind. I can’t sit still when I sing, so the kids can’t sit still.”

Joel Williamson, the author of Elvis Presley: A Southern Life, claimed that two years before Elvis met his future wife, he took a group of three 14-year-old girls with him on tour who were up “for pillow fights, tickling, kissing and cuddling”.

Elsewhere in Williamson’s book, he claims that Presley had a 15-year-old girlfriend when he was 19 and that the singer was “obsessed with virginity”.

Numerous reports have claimed that Elvis went as far as drugging Priscilla and spiking her with amphetamines to keep her awake through their mammoth sex sessions.

Allegedly, after being introduced to them in the Army, Presley had grown addicted to the drugs, and they later grabbed control of his life.

During these drugged-up sex marathons with Priscilla, Elvis also took photographs on a Polaroid camera, which he stored in a silver suitcase delivered to Priscilla after his death — years after their divorce.

Quincy Jones revealed that he always refused to work with Elvis because he was a “racist”. The superstar producer explained, “No. I wouldn’t work with him.

Death

His drug addiction worsened after the divorce. On the morning of August 16, 1977, Elvis was found on the floor of his bathroom at Graceland. The doctors said that the immediate cause of death was cardiac arrest. He was only 42.
