Career
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Kelce with the 63rd selection overall in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In the off-season, Andy Reid was appointed head coach of the Chiefs.
Reid had coached and selected his brother Jason Kelce in 2011 while he was the Eagles’ head coach, thus he was acquainted with Kelce. On June 6, 2013, Kelce was signed by the Chiefs to a rookie contract worth $3.12 million, with a $703,304 signing bonus.
Kelce scored his first NFL touchdown on a 20-yard reception from quarterback Alex Smith in Week 3’s game against the Miami Dolphins. He was fined $11,025 on November 30 for engaging in “unsportsmanlike conduct” during the Denver Broncos’ 29–16 victory.
Von Miller, a linebacker for the Broncos, was the target of an improper hand gesture and move by Kelce. Andy Reid, the head coach of the Chiefs, later referred to this as “immature”.
Kelce agreed to a five-year, $46 million contract deal on January 29, 2016. According to the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016, he was ranked 91st by his fellow players.
In the eighth week of the season, Kelce caught seven passes for 101 yards and a score against the Indianapolis Colts. He got into an argument with two officials on the lack of a pass interference penalty being called in the following game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which resulted in two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and his ejection.
He was unhappy at the first penalty and used his towel to mock field judge Mike Weatherford during a flagging motion, which led to the second. He then paid a $24,309 punishment for his outburst.
In Week 13, he caught eight passes for 140 yards against the Atlanta Falcons. Kelce’s fourth straight game over 100 receiving yards came the next week, when he recorded 101 receiving yards against the Oakland Raiders. He became just the second tight end in NFL history to do so, after Tony Gonzalez of the Chiefs and Jimmy Graham.
Once veteran punter Dustin Colquitt was cut loose during the summer, Kelce was joined by fellow 2013 draftee Eric Fisher and Anthony Sherman as the team’s longest-serving players. Kelce agreed to a four-year, $57 million contract deal with the Chiefs on August 14, 2020, which would last through the 2025 campaign.
He has two touchdown receptions in a 26–17 win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. After scoring a touchdown in Week 8 against the Jets, Kelce honored former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez by dunking the ball between the goal posts. He was fined $12,500 and punished for his unsportsmanlike behavior.
Week 5: Kelce scored four receiving touchdowns in the Raiders’ 30–29 victory. When it comes to touchdowns received in a game, Kelce tied the franchise record. He recorded his NFL record-breaking (among tight ends) 33rd 100-yard receiving game with 115 yards in the Chiefs’ Week 11 matchup against the Chargers.
In addition, he tallied three touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown, which he scored against the Chargers for the second consecutive season.
The Chiefs would go on to win Super Bowl LVIII 25–22, making it just the second Super Bowl in history to go into overtime. Kelce would win his third Super Bowl. Since the New England Patriots did so in 2003 and 2004, the Chiefs are the first club to win the Super Bowl twice in a row.
Kelce was seen yelling at Chiefs head coach Andy Reid during the game after the Chiefs committed a turnover while he was off the field. After the event garnered backlash, Kelce issued an apology on his podcast.

Following Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs’ yelling and pushing of head coach Andy Ried during Sunday’s second quarter of Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers, the Super Bowl 2024 took an unexpected turn. On Monday, the video of the furious exchange went viral and sparked emotions from fans.
In the second quarter, Kelce made a mistake and it all started. In the widely shared video, Kelce is seen yelling at Reid from the sidelines and hurling his helmet in a fit of rage. After the fight, Jerick McKinnon broke up the dispute between the player and the former coach.
After pushing Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid during a heated altercation during Super Bowl LVIII, Travis Kelce is coming under fire.
The Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25–22 in overtime, and tight end Kelce would cap his night in Las Vegas with another Super Bowl victory. He was celebrating with girlfriend Taylor Swift.
In order to help the Chiefs win a third Super Bowl in five seasons, quarterback Patrick Mahomes needed a trustworthy target, and Kelce produced multiple crucial plays in the team’s late-game comeback.
However, it appeared as though Kelce’s night would be summed up by his altercation with Reid, as the tight end lost his cool against the Chiefs coach before the end of the second quarter, and the 49ers were ahead at the half.
When the Chiefs fumbled the ball near the 49ers end zone, they were trailing 3-0, and Kelce was upset with Reid for the play calling decision.
