Career
Although Hamlin spent the most of his early years in Chesterfield, Virginia, he was born in Tampa, Florida. In 1988, at the age of seven, Hamlin started competing in go-kart races. He won the WKA Manufacturers Cup in 1997 at the age of 15.
At sixteen, he began competing in ministock racing. At Langley Speedway, Hamlin won both the pole and the race in his first stock car competition. In 1998, he advanced to the Grand Stock category, and in 2000, he went on to the Late Model Stock Cars.
He took first place in 10 Late Model races in 2002 and went on to win 25 of the 36 races in 2003, including 30 poles. While racing Late Model Stock Cars full-time in 2004, Hamlin signed a driver development deal with Joe Gibbs Racing.
With EJP Racing, Hamlin participated in five NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races in 2004. At Indianapolis Raceway Park, he finished in tenth position in his NASCAR debut. Later, he competed at Talladega Superspeedway for the first time in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, finishing third in Andy Hillenburg’s No. 10 Pontiac for Fast Track Racing.
He made his Busch Series debut at Darlington Raceway, where he made his last start of the season. After a rain-out start of twenty-seventh, he finished ninth in the Joe Gibbs Driven Performance Oil Chevrolet, No. 18.
In 2008, Hamlin’s season was almost exactly the same as the previous one, except he finished ninth in points and earned a victory at Martinsville Speedway early in the campaign. In the 2008 Crown Royal Presents the Dan Lowry 400, he led 381 of 410 laps—the most dominant run by a driver since 2000—but he ended up 24th after cutting a tire.
Driving the No. 18 and No. 20 entries for Gibbs as well as the No. 32 Dollar General/Hass avocados-sponsored vehicle for Braun Racing, he won four races in the Nationwide Series.
With high hopes for the 2010 season, Hamlin started. Many thought he would be the favorite to win the Sprint Cup and replace Jimmie Johnson. While playing basketball on January 22, 2010, Hamlin tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
They decided to wait until after the season to do his procedure. On March 27, 2010, Hamlin declared that he will undergo surgery on his left knee the following Monday. The choice was taken in order to shield his knee from more harm.
Kurt Busch denied Denny Hamlin the win in the 2011 Budweiser Shootout when Hamlin crossed the yellow line in an effort to overtake Ryan Newman on turn four to the finish line at the final second.
Denny finished eighth in Las Vegas, his lone top 10 finish, after struggling in the first eight races. But when the series reached Richmond, Denny cranked up the heat, winning the Nationwide race as well as his charity event.
Nevertheless, he would come in second to teammate Kyle Busch. After placing in the top 20 in Dover, he would later finish outside of the top 10, but he bounced back with third and tenth place results in Charlotte and Kansas, respectively.
At the 2024 Busch Light Clash at The Coliseum, Hamlin won to kick off the 2024 season.
On September 21, 2020, Bubba Wallace of 23XI Racing, and NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan—a close friend of Hamlin—announced that they will be fielding a single-car team for the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season.

Controversy
The contentious decision to raise the yellow flag at the conclusion of the 2024 Daytona 500 is something Denny Hamlin finds acceptable. Five yellow flags were raised during the first race of the NASCAR Cup season, which is the fewest since the 2004 season began. Each of the five events was noteworthy and had a big effect on the race.
During the race, Chastain attempted to pass Cindric, who was being shoved from behind, by trying for an opening that was not there. Cars No. 1 and No. 2 therefore skidded on the infield grass, giving the opportunity to seize the lead and win the race.
NASCAR was forced to issue a yellow flag as the No. 2 Ford began to reenter the racetrack. When the yellow flag was raised, Byron was in the lead and was proclaimed the winner.
A similar incident happened on the last lap of the inaugural Xfinity Series, but NASCAR chose not to issue a yellow flag, allowing race leaders Austin Hill and Sheldon Creed to fight for the victory.
In contrast to the Cup race, neither driver was in a vulnerable position since both had previously past the white flag. This was the argument Hamlin made in favor of raising the yellow flag during the incident that brought the Daytona 500 race to a halt.
